Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence by Ryuichi Sakamoto is undoubtedly one of the greatest songs ever written in this era and holds a special place in my heart as it is a piece I grew up with. It's truly heartbreaking that his incredible journey has come to an end.
Before his final concert, I asked Zen Patipan to perform this masterpiece on the ukulele because I wanted to hear how this instrument would bring the song to life. The ukulele itself was inspired by the concept of Arete, and Ryuichi embodies that idea perfectly, making him my idol until his very last performance.
Combining all these elements together in one place felt unparalleled, and I can't think of anyone better than Zen to create a ukulele version that does justice to this song. I hope you can enjoy this masterpiece as much as I do.
